At the beginning of the year, it seems traditional to want to start again, whether that's a new job, a new fitness routine, a new diet or a new project. We have a clear out to freshen things up so we feel present and ready for the new start we want for ourselves. However, if you follow the Pagan wheel of the year, Samhain is considered the Celtic New Year and this happens at Halloween. The Chinese New Year is celebrated in February, which coincides with Imbolc on the Pagan calendar and indicates the early signs of new life as we head into spring. So why do we pressure ourselves with resolutions that we struggle to stick to and then decide to wait until the next new year to try again. Maybe we can just start again whenever we feel motivated enough to do so. Surely this would take the pressure off each New Year. We can pick whatever new year suits us and make the changes we want for ourselves then.
It is okay to want changes in our life, as we get older we want different things, we have different priorities and we feel differently about all the things that were once so familiar and comforting to us. But we don't have to limit the time to make changes to certain times of the year. I know how easy it is to procrastinate and put things off until Monday, or once I have had lunch or dinner or maybe tomorrow when I am less tired. But if we truly want something different, why wait? Get on with the changes as soon as you can, then you can decide sooner if it is the change you really want or if perhaps you actually need something different. That's the great thing about change; it's fluid, we don't have to stick to each change we make, we can keep evolving to be the person we want to be, doing the things we want to do and we can do it in our own time.
I know there are things in our life that will make it hard to change and maybe those are the times we have to wait for a while or wait for a better time, just don't wait for the perfect time because that will never happen. Perfection doesn't exist but good enough is good enough and can be the next best thing. So do the next right thing for you, when you feel ready to do it.
